Wizards of Once: Twice Magic

4 of 5 Stars

<A quest to destroy the sinister witches from the Wildwoods. A journey to bring the wizards and warriors together after ages apart. A desperate attempt to save Xar before he succumbs completely to the witch stain consuming his flesh. The Wizards of Once: Twice Magic by Cressida Cowell was one of those stories I picked up for its art. I love reading stories that have unique illustrations inside them. After finishing the first book, I was wary about the second because of how unedited the first novel seemed. However, this one surprised me. The second books amps up the plot. This novel, also, is better edited than the first. And the characters are well developed. The story is vivid and the settings are more described as the story goes on. The dialogue is cheeky and fresh. The characters: diverse and obsessive. Even labeled as a children's story, I enjoyed its humor and the storyline. It has all the basic needs for a fantasy Middle Grade plot: relatable characters, an easy-to-follow story, and a storytelling style that keeps giving back to the reader through funny dialogue and entertaining character growth. I especially loved Xar's pride complex and his continued need to grow out of his egoism and selfishness. However, not all stories are perfect. The villain continues to show up throughout the story without explaining why he is there or where he comes from. Additionally, the adults in the book are painted as stupid and overzealous: obsessed with unnecessary issues. The one part about Twice Magic that bothered me the most is that there is no real setting description except vague one-paragraph blips you read when they enter a new place. Nothing beyond that. The places they go to are scarcely described. Otherwise, the story is well put together for a children's novel. I loved the ending. It was intriguing and made the next book to come sound incredibly exciting. Also, the beginning. It was a huge jump in progress from the first book and came unexpectedly from where we left off beforehand. The story progresses in a way that makes you want to keep reading nonstop until the end.>
